BATON ROUGE – LSU’s American Institute of Chemical Engineering, or AIChE, student Chem-E-Car team recently won second place in the car competition and first place in the poster presentation at the Second International Chem-E-Car Competition, held at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering in Montreal, Canada, on Aug. 23-27.

According to the AIChE Web site, Chem-E-Cars are chemically powered vehicles built and designed by students. The Chem-E-Car is limited by AIChE size constraints and must be designed to carry a specified cargo for a certain distance. Competitors are evaluated on both accuracy and creativity. More information about the competition can be found at http://www.aiche.org/Students/Awards/ChemeCar.aspx.

The LSU team competed using a car named “Swamp Thing” against universities from around the world, including Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Iran, Malaysia and Australia, as well as three other teams from the United States.

In this international competition, the teams each ran the chemically powered cars twice, with the best result being used in the final standings. After the first round, the LSU team was in fourth place with a run of about four feet and seven inches from the target line.

After a fine-tuning the parameters, the car’s second run stopped one foot and two inches from the target line, which propelled the team to a second place finish. Puerto Rico’s team stopped exactly on the line and was awarded first place. Third place went to the team from The Cooper Union, and the team from Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico was awarded fourth place.

Members of the LSU Chem-E-Car team attending the conference were:
  • Matt Daniel, chemical engineering senior from Harahan, La.
  • Kirk Rollins, chemical engineering senior from Church Point, La.
  • Angela Juncker, chemical engineering junior from Prairieville, La.
  • Ryan Pazdera, chemical engineering senior from Prairieville, La.

LSU Professor Francisco Hung served as the AIChE car team advisor.

The LSU team secured a spot at this international competition by placing second in the car competition at the 2008 Annual Meeting of AIChE, which was held in Philadelphia last November. With their third place win at the regional competition in April 2009, they will once again be competing in the national competition at the 2009 Annual Meeting of AIChE in Nashville, Tenn.
