| BATON ROUGE – W. James Catallo, associate professor of environmental toxicology in the LSU Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences, was killed Saturday, July 25, as the result of a motorcycle accident in Baton Rouge, La. Catallo collaborated with the Department of Chemistry at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, the LSU School of Renewable and Natural Resources and the Audubon Sugar Institute on research focusing on biomass (sewage sludge, waste forest and food matter, invasive and pest species, agricultural wastes) transformation in hydrothermal systems into usable products, such as petroleum hydrocarbon mixtures. He also investigated air toxins, including biochemical and cellular responses to inhaled hydrocarbons from burned fuels and flaring wastes, and worked on toxic tort and class action cases involving industrial and transportation accidents/fires and possible toxin exposure. Catallo received his bachelor’s degree from Tulane University in 1981 and his Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary in 1989. He joined the faculty at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 1994. -30- |
