| BATON ROUGE – Robert Twilley has been selected to serve on the National Academies of Science, or NAS, Committee on Independent Scientific Review of Everglades Restoration Progress, or CISRERP. This panel operates within the NAS Division on Earth and Life Studies as part of the Water Science and Technology Board. Twilley, associate vice chancellor of research and economic development at LSU, who leads the Coastal Sustainability Agenda and is professor of oceanography and coastal sciences, was selected to serve in the third incarnation of this group since its inception in 2004. The panel has been Congressionally-mandated to review the progress toward achieving the restoration goals of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, or CERP. “Restoring the Everglades is one of the largest ecosystem restoration programs with many of the challenges similar to restoring the Mississippi River delta,” said Twilley. “I look forward to tackling these challenges with other members of this NRC panel to provide guidance on how to achieve effective large-scale restoration efforts in the United States and abroad.” CISRERP is funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of the Interior and South Florida Water Management District. A key responsibility of the group is to make sure that the best science and engineering principles and practices are being applied to CERP.
