Stemming from a series of smaller-scale sessions sponsored by the Southern Rural Development Center at Mississippi State University and the Kellogg Foundation, the LSU poverty summit drew wider participation, with presenters from Penn State University, Syracuse University and Cornell University, as well as state and federal government and non-governmental agencies. Regional participants included experts from LSU, Southern University, Tulane University, Mississippi State University, Georgia College & State University and the University of Kentucky. The summit was introduced by LSU Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development Brooks Keel and Southern University Vice Chancellor of Cooperative Extension Progam Adell Brown, who both voiced their support for the summit agenda and the LSU Poverty Initiative. Co-sponsoring the summit at LSU was the Louisiana Poverty Initiative, the university’s new multidisciplinary hiring initiative, or MHI, a faculty cooperative designed to boost academic research and promote evidence-based policy toward the elimination of poverty at large.
