| LSU employees, AmeriCorps volunteers and Old South Baton Rouge community members will come together for a clean-up day on Veteran's Day, Monday, Nov. 11, as part of LSU's Community-University Partnership program targeting the neighborhood located between the campus and downtown Baton Rouge. The clean-up effort will focus on the old Lutheran Cemetery at 1735 Eddie Robinson Drive. The cemetery has been neglected over the years and fallen trees have damaged some of the markers and vaults. Representatives of LSU's Office of Landscape Services will begin work on the project at 8 a.m., while the AmeriCorps workers and other volunteers will join in around 1 p.m. The cemetery, unclaimed by any of the area's churches and possibly of historical significance, will be an ongoing project for the partnership program. The Community-University Partnership, or CUP, sprang from a $400,000 Community Outreach Partnership Centers grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant, awarded to LSU and various community partners, marked the first COPC grant to any institution in Louisiana. The Community Outreach Partnership Centers program is administered by HUD's Office of University Partnerships. Established in 1994, the Office of University Partnerships is a catalyst for joining colleges and universities with their communities in a shared effort to work on solving pressing urban problems. HUD's annual COPC grants, awarded on a competitive basis, help colleges and universities provide technical assistance, training and applied research to community-based groups and local governments. The activities are chosen and designed jointly by the schools and neighborhood groups. Volunteers are welcome to participate in the clean-up day and should arrive at the cemetery around 1 p.m. To volunteer or receive more information on the project or CUP, contact Judy Bethly at 225-389-8566 or jbethly@lsu.edu. -30- |
